Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Pottstown Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Pottstown typically runs $340-$620 for most single-flue setups, including removal of the failed cap, flue sizing verification, and proper mounting with Gelco-compatible stainless hardware. We stock the common Gelco Series-A and Series-EL sizes on our trucks, and most replacements are finished in under two hours. If you’re staring at rust stains on your brickwork or a cap that’s tilting after last winter’s ice, you’re probably in the right place.

We’ve replaced Gelco caps across Pottstown, from the stone colonials up near Hill School to the ranch homes off High Street where the wind whips across open fields harder than owners expect. The chimney does not lie - and neither do we.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes two main residential lines we see in Montgomery County: the Series-A (standard single-flue, 8″-13″ round or 9″×13″ to 13″×18″ rectangular) and the Series-EL (outside-mount, designed to cover multi-flue or deteriorated crowns). The Series-A bolts directly to the flue tile with stainless tension bands; the Series-EL anchors to the crown itself with masonry screws and a bed of sealant.

To identify yours, check the underside of the existing cap for a stamped model number, or measure the flue opening and note whether your cap sits inside the flue (Series-A) or over the entire crown (Series-EL). The critical gotcha: Gelco Series-A caps for 8″ round flues will not seat properly on 8″ square flues, a mismatch we see in about one of every six Pottstown calls. The aftermarket equivalents we carry match Gelco’s gauge and mesh spec - 18-gauge 304 stainless, 5/8″ spark-arrestor mesh - but we are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust streaks running down the chimney face. Gelco caps use 304 stainless, but the spot-welded seams and lower-grade hardware kits shipped with some big-box versions fail first. Once water gets behind the cap, it tracks down the flue and stains brick within a season.
  • The cap is tilting, loose, or missing entirely after wind. The tension-band system on Series-A caps loosens as flue tile expands and contracts through freeze-thaw cycles. In Pottstown, we see this most in late March, when winter’s last ice has worked the band free.
  • Water in the firebox or damp odors after rain. A properly seated Gelco cap sheds water six inches past the flue rim. If the mesh screen has collapsed or the lid seam has separated, water drives straight down.
  • Birds or squirrels in the flue. Gelco’s 5/8″ mesh keeps animals out, but impact damage from branches or ice can bow the screen inward, creating an entry gap. We’ve pulled nests from caps that looked intact from the ground.
  • Spalling brick or deteriorated mortar on the top course. This is the cap’s failure in slow motion. Water bypassing a compromised cap saturates the crown and upper brick, and by the time you notice the damage, the cap has been leaking for two or three winters.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range in Pottstown
Series-A single-flue cap, installed $340-$480
Series-EL outside-mount cap, installed $480-$620
Flue tile repair or crown prep (if needed) $180-$340 additional
Rust-stained brick cleaning (optional add-on) $120-$200

What drives the range: accessibility (steep roof pitch, height), whether the existing cap has seized hardware that needs cutting, and if the crown beneath requires resealing before the new cap mounts. Our estimate includes the cap, stainless hardware, sealant, and labor. The number we give you is the number on the invoice. Every Gelco-compatible installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground: confirm the cap is present, note any tilt, and look for rust streaks. If you have a stable ladder, a level roof, and comfort working at height, removing a loose Series-A cap is straightforward - but installing the replacement correctly is where it goes wrong.

The tension band must seat square on flue tile that is often chipped or uneven. The Series-EL requires a proper sealant bed and masonry anchors set without cracking the crown. More importantly, most homeowners don’t own a flue gauge and will guess at sizing, then discover the “standard” cap doesn’t fit. We’ve been called to Pottstown homes where a DIY install leaked within a month because the band was overtightened and cracked the flue lip. If you’re not certain of the fit, call us. We’ll size it, stock it, and stand behind it.
